Waiting for days on end for a reply to the letter we posted weeks ago, and running to the postbox outside our homes as soon as we hear the sound of the postman’s arrival in our neighbourhood, those are memories of a bygone era. The charm of the snail mail has now been replaced by email and other forms of social media that enable instant communication.

In an attempt to encourage people to keep alive the art of writing letters, the Office of the Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Circle, is organising programmes involving schoolchildren. Very soon the Postal Department will organise a letter-writing competition for schoolchildren. The participants will have to write letters to their grandparents on ‘My favourite book’ or ‘One day in my school’ or ‘How I spent my vacation’.

The Department of Posts will provide an inland letter and Rs. 5 postal cover for free for the participants.

“By teaching children the art of writing letters, we can ensure that they take forward the tradition of sending and receiving letters. Writing letters to loved ones helps people bond, and of course it feels great receiving a letter”, Manilal Carvalho, principal, DPS Bangalore East.

The contest will be held on October 10 at the Metro Boulevard on M.G. Road between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will be organised for two categories of students: those from Class 1 to 5, and those from Class 6 to 10. Interested students may get their names registered for the contest in their schools, or they can even reach the venue with their school identity card to participate in the competition.

Prizes will be given away to writers of the best three letters, and the winners will qualify for the competition at the national level.
