GREATER NOIDA: Ashu Raina lives in Supertech Eco Village 1 in Greater Noida (west). He has been living in his new apartment for a year but hasn't found a way of getting credit card bills, cheque books and online purchases delivered at home. That's because his area doesn't have a pin code.
Earlier known as Noida Extension, Greater Noida (west) was built on land acquired from villagers of Bisrakh. So, technically, the pin code of Bisrakh village applies to the area, which has now evolved into a mini-town. But the village pin code doesn't work in an urban settlement divided into various sectors. The area now hosts at least 2 lakh apartments, of which a few thousand have been handed over and families have moved in. Altogether, there are 55 apartment projects, and most are nearing completion, which will see the population grow manifold over the next couple of years.

Indrish Gupta, co-founder of Noida Extension Flat Owners Association, said residents of Greater Noida (west) are always in a fix about which pin code to use for booking a product online or getting addresses registered with banks.
"Most people use their office address to source letters and couriers. But that cannot be a solution. We don't know why the government and the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority ignored such a crucial problem," said Gupta. At Gaur City, residents tentatively use a pin code, 201 309. It is not a designated code, though. "For registration of our houses, no pin code has been put on paper. Houses are getting registered without a pin code," Vishok Kaul, a resident of Gaur City said.
Amit Kumar Maheshwari, assistant superintendent of post offices, Gautam Budh Nagar, offered a temporary solution.
"Ideally, those in Gaur City should use the pin code 201 009. The other areas are now being catered to by the city post office of Ghaziabad. Unless there is a proposal for a post office locally within Noida Extension, the current situation will continue," he said.
District magistrate N P Singh said the problem has to be brought to the notice of the post master general of India. "While the entire Noida Extension officially falls under Bisrakh, one has to approach the post master general's office to get a designated pin code for it," Singh said.
Asked if the postal department had taken any steps to resolve this conundrum, Noida post master Suprender Singh said, "If residents of the area request a separate post office, it can be created. Once that happens, the entire area will be served by a uniform postal code.The other option is to upgrade an existing post office in the vicinity. Then that pin code can be universally used within the area."
GNIDA, which holds administrative charge of Greater Noida (west), promised to initiate the creation of a new post office. "The lack of a designated pin code for Noida Extension has been a problem. Now that people are moving in, we will attend to this issue immediately. We will recommend a separate post office," P C Gupta, additional CEO, GNIDA, said.
