A postal device used in older times found

Tirupur, November 4, 2016

A team of four archaeologists attached to Tirupur-based Verarajendran Archaeological and Historical Research Centre has found a century-old device used by postmen of that era at Avinashi taluk.

The 75 cm-long tool has four round bells attached to the main stick and has a spear at the top.
“This device has found a mention in the postal records kept at Alathoor post office on the outskirts of Tirupur. Such appliances were used by the postmen for dual purposes. As soon as they reach a particular village, they swirl the stick which makes the bells ring announcing their arrival with letters”, S. Ravikumar, director of Verarajendran Archaeological and Historical Research Centre, told The Hindu . In those days, the postmen don’t go to individual houses rather they deposit the letters in bulk at the office of village administrative officers. From there, the villagers take away their letters.

“ During that era, even the government letters/orders meant for particular areas too were deliveredby the postmen. The officials will then read out the contents to the people”, said K. Ponnusamy, another team member. The spear, affixed at the top of the stick, was used as a protective gear.

Postal department coughs up 9.9L to PPF depositor

AHMEDABAD: It was a moment of vindication for 52-year-old Saurin Dalal, a resident of Paldi, when, recently, the postal department finally sent him a cheque, releasing the interest on his deposit and other charges, amounting to Rs9.9 lakh. Dalal, had to fight for four years to get his hard earned money back from the grip of the postal department, in whose Public Provident Fund (PPF) scheme he had invested his savings. A city-based consumer action group helped him to assert his rights.

"I had invested a certain amount in the PPF account and when the deposit matured in August 2010, I received the principal amount without the interest. The interest amounted to Rs5.68 lakh," said Dalal.

Now, you will get all PF, pension dues on or before retirement date on PM Narendra Modi push

New Delhi | November 2, 2016

Your provident fund (PF) and Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) dues will be paid by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) on or before the day you retire. A decision to this effect has been taken by EPFO and instructions have been issued by the Central Provident Fund Commissioner, V P Joy on Tuesday to all its offices as a follow up the directions received from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recent PRAGATI review meeting held on October 26. The PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance And Timely Implementation) was held to reviewing programmes and projects of the central and state governments.

“It has been decided that PF and pension payments to members of EPF Scheme 1952 and EPS 1995 are made on the date of retirement itself,” Joy has said in his communication to EPFO offices.

The move comes a day after the CPFC issued instructions regarding settlement in respect of death cases on priority within 7 days.

Joy has instructed EPFO offices to take several steps to ensure payment of dues on the day of retirement. These include:

Generate a monthly list of retiring EPF/EPS members attaining the age of superannuation three months in advance by concerned offices. This should be communicated to the concerned members and their respective employers.

The employers should be requested to make payment of contributions in advance in respect of such retiring employees one month in advance of the date of their retirement.

A complete set of PF and pension claim form along with the communication to fill up the forms and submit to the concerned office complete in all respect at least 14 days prior to the date of retirement should be sent to the retiring employees

The PRO and officials in the Facilitation Centre should be instructed to scrutinise the claim forms received in respect of retirement cases and guide the claimants for submission of all required documents in one attempt only.

For this purpose an official trained and deputed in the facilitation centre will receive the retirement claims. Proper display in regard be made on the seat/counter “please contact for retirement cases’ in Hindi, Regional Language and English.

All such retirement claims should be stamped in bold ‘ Retirement claims – Top Priority” The PF claim settlement amount must invariably be credited to the member accounts on or before the date of retirement.

Tech magic: Philately now at your fingertips

TNN | Oct 31, 2016, 06

AHMEDABAD: Need to know how many stamps have been released on Mahat ma Gandhi or Sardar Pa tel by India Post so far?

Want information on how many commemorative stamps were issued in a specific year? Or do you wish to verify details of any stamp before collection or purchase?

Philately Reckoner India, an Android-based mobile phone application developed by Gujarat Philatelists' Association (GPA), aims to answer all these questions and much more. The developers said that it is India's first such app that has the record of over 3,000 postal stamps issued since 1947, with pictures and description. Mainak Kathiyara, the president emeritus of GPA, said that Gujarat is the state with one of the highest numbers of philatelists in the country with very diverse collection."Many a times, new collectors approach us with questions related to postal stamps such as the specific date or year of release or all the themes covered by the postal department so far," he said. "It gave us the idea for the app. We worked with philatelist Jatin Trivedi who developed it from scratch according to our vision."

The application has a list of stamps for each year, with photograph, release date, quantity and brief description. One can also search for specific stamps.
The GPA officials clarify that the app is not for philatelists alone.
They say that it is for students, researchers, historians, academicians, postal employees and public at large. "The small stamp contains a cache of information on society at large --dignitaries, historic events, flora and fauna, and international relations and so on," said an official."Thus, our effort is to put all the available knowledge at the fingertips of the user."

Kathiyara said that the app will be ever-evolving."At the moment, we have sections such as commemorative stamps, definitive stamps, miniature sheets, sheetlets, and My Stamps issued by India Post," he said. "While many sections are up-to-date, others are being updated and all sections will be updated periodically with relevant information."

Verify the same in the supervisor login and finally check the status of the account using the menu HACCDET it should be changed to mode of operation 012 (self or single account)

Important Point to Remember :-

  • In case of SCSS account with joint holder, if first depositor expires and also if the second depositor is below 60 then when we follow above procedure system will give the error "age out of allowed range" in this case we have to correct manually in passbook by collecting the necessary documents from the customer.
  • As per POSB norms even if the second depositor is below 60 yrs also he/she can continue the account in case of first depositor expires.
