Jayalalithaa dead: Central government, several states declare one-day mourning after Amma’s demise

New Delhi, Dec 6: The Central Government on Tuesday declared one-day mourning after the demise of the charismatic six time chief minister and iconic leader J Jayalalithaa. Flags were flying at half mast at President House in New Delhi. Several states of the nation including Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Bihar too declared one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supremo.


As per reports by PTI, a Home Ministry spokesperson said the national flag on all government buildings across the country will be flown at half-mast throughout the day. The central government will also accord state funeral to Jayalalithaa.


Preparations at MGR Memorial at Marina beach are underway for the last rites ceremony of Jayalalithaa. Tamil Nadu mourned the demise of their beloved Amma since the time news of her demise spread like wild fire. Shops were shut in Rameswaram whereas Shops and commercial establishments in Chennai down shutters. Amma supporters arrived at Rajaji Hall today early morning to pay homage and take a last glimpse of the motherly figure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Chennai and will pay floral tributes to J Jayalalithaa.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha remained adjourned for the day after obituary, as a mark of respect, in memory of Jayalalithaa. Cremation of Jayalalithaa will take place at 4:30 PM today at Marina Beach in Chennai. As per recent reports, President Pranab Mukherjee is likely to fly to Chennai today to pay last respects to the leader.

The 68-year old famous politician was declared dead on the night of December 5 after battling for life for 75 days. A day before, she suffered a cardiac arrest at the Apollo Hospitals. Senior AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam took oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu early on Tuesday in presence of Governor Vidyasagar Rao at Raj Bhavan.


Jayalalithaa’s body was taken from her Poes Garden residence early this morning to Rajaji Hall. Supporters and members AIADMK queued up and packed the hall to have a last glimpse of their ‘Puratchi Thalaivi Amma’.
