The Supreme Court on Thursday gave huge relief to the Centre by permitting voluntary use of Aadhaar card by citizens to avail benefits under MGNREGA, pension, PF and PM Jandhan Yojna schemes.
A 5-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu said these four schemes could be implemented by use of Aadhaar card.
The SC had earlier restricted use of Aadhaar for giving subsidy on LPG and for drawal of ration under PDS.
However, the SC said that addition of four more welfare schemes to Aadhaar would not entitle government to insist on the unique identification number or force people to enroll under the scheme.
