India Post is digitising its all 2,925 post offices in Nagpur region
The image of a postman has been quite traditional as of now: a guy in khaki uniform carrying a brown bag on a bi-cycle. But soon, this image will be drastically changed due to digitisation of India Post. Government of India has decided to digitise 1.5 lakh post offices across India which include the Nagpur Region. Besides, every postman will discharge role of a mobile bank in rural areas and help a large population to access banking transaction. Mariamma Thomas, Post Master General, Nagpur Region shared the future plans of India Post for Central India with The Hitavada.
The region comprise a total of 2,925 post offices and about 8,613 employees are working in India Post in 11 revenue districts of Maharashtra.
“India Post is working on different new projects and the Regional Post Saving Bank is the latest one which will be introduced soon at Nagpur GPO,” said Thomas.
Regional Post Saving Bank will work like a bank where customers have to open accounts and India Post will issue Postal debit cards and cheque books like other banks at a very nominal cost. Till date a total of 10,078 debit cards are already distributed. The debit cards can be accepted only in postal ATMs, she explained.
“Setting up of a centralised data center, connecting all post offices with intranet, advanced disaster management and data recovery systems are some of the processes which would be implemented to make
India Post one of the most technologically advanced platform in the world,” Thomas added.
“Centralised data center of all post offices in Nagpur region will solve all problems of the department. Communication with post offices in remote and naxal areas is the biggest challenge, it takes around four days to complete the account procedure in such areas but computerisation will help to complete the procedure quickly,” the PMG stated.
She said that this system will help to offer all facilities that Government of India is providing through India Post in remote villages and naxal-affected areas in Maharashtra.
Soon, India Post will provide hand held devices to every postman, which would be connected with the national data centers via SIM card. This device would be powered by solar power and the postman would be trained to help the rural users to deposit money, withdraw money and provide financial services as well, Thomas explained.
Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) has joined hands with India Post to computerise all GPOs working and they are providing assistance for the back office work.
Similarly, India Post is planning to collect soil samples from farmers and they will handover it to Krishi Vigyan Kendras and after testing the soil the department will send the Soil Health Cards to the farmers.
