US Postal Service will issue special stamp to celebrate Diwali

New Delhi, August 24, 2016

In a dedication ceremony on October 5, the US Postal Service will issue a Diwali special postal stamp.

The first day of issue ceremony will take place at the Consulate General of India, New York and will celebrate the festival of Diwali with a 'forever' stamp.

Created in 2007 by US Postal Services, Forever stamps are non-denominational and can be used to mail First Class letters no matter what the postal rate is.

The stamp features a lit diya (oil lamp) with a sparkling gold background. The photograph was taken by Sally Andersen-Bruce of New Milford, Connecticut and the stamp was designed by Greg Breeding of Charlottesville, Virginia.

This Forever stamp will be equal in value to the First Class Mail 1-ounce price.

Nearly 40,000 suggestions for stamp ideas come from the public every year which are then reviewed by the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.

Out of that only 25 topic suggestions are selected by for the Postmaster General's approval.

The festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil will be celebrated on October 29 in South Indian and October 30 in North India, this year.

It falls on the eve of, or on, the new moon that occurs between mid-October and November.

Diwali also marks for the new year for Gujaratis and a few other states.
