Kannada-speaking postal employees plan protest

KASARAGOD, September 28, 2015

Postal employees from the Kannada linguistic minority here are all set to launch an agitation to protest against the move to deprive them of a chance to write departmental tests in their mother tongue.

The decision to resort to strike comes in the wake of the Department of Posts issuing an order last year directing them to write the tests in other languages. The employees had been enjoying the privilege to write the tests in Kannada for the last 25 years.

With the recent orders, the employees in the lower rank will be affected the most, the action committee representatives told a press conference here on Saturday.

An action committee chaired by N. A. Nellikkunnu, MLA, has been constituted as over 300 Kannada speaking linguistic minority staff are employed with the postal department in the district.

The employees are planning to stage a march to the office of the Postal Superintendent here on September 29 to highlight their grievances and restore the facility, they said.
